If you like to study about science, you have to read Neon Facts. Many people only realize that the usage of neon is just for making the lamps. Actually there are many other benefits of neon in our daily life. If you are interested to learn about the discovery, history, and usage of neon, read the following post below:

Neon Facts 1: the chemical element

Let’s find out the chemical element of neon. The atomic number is 10. In the periodic table, it comes in the symbol Ne.

Neon Facts 2: characteristics

Neon is characterized with odorless and colorless inert gas. It is not chemically reactive. In the periodic table, neon is included as a member of a noble gas group.

Neon Facts 3: the melting and boiling point

The boiling point of neon comes at -246.08 °C or -410.94 °F. The melting point is around -258.59 °C or -433.46 °F. Talking about the name of the gas, it was derived from the Greek word, veov. The meaning is new.

Neon Facts 4: Sir William Ramsay and Morris W. Travers

Sir William Ramsay and Morris W. Travers were the British chemists who discovered neon in 1898. Both chemists made an experiment by chilling a sample of air. When the air was in the liquid form, they warmed up the liquid and collected the gasses when they were boiled off. The pair discovered three gasses from the boiled liquid. Neon was the second gas. The first one was Krypton, while the third gas was xenon. Find out more gases in element facts here.

Neon Facts 5: Georges Claude

Georges Claude was a French engineer who created neon lighting by using the neon leftover that he got from the air liquefaction company in 1902. The scientist actually was interested to use neon for the indoor home lighting. Due to the striking color, the company used neon to create the lamps for the advertising signs.

Neon Facts 6: no chemical compound

This gas does not form any chemical compound. It means that you will never see neon bounded with other elements. If you want to know the stable isotope of neon, it is created within stars.

Neon Facts 7: the amount of neon

Neon is called as abundant gas on earth. It is ranked in the fifth position of the most abundance chemical element in the university. It is below hydrogen, helium, oxygen and carbon. However, neon is not easy to find out the atmosphere of earth. It only occupies 0.0018 percent on the atmosphere.

Neon Facts 8: cryogenic refrigerant

Neon is not only used to make lamps or ads sign. It can be used for cryogenic refrigerant. But the neon comes in the form of liquid.

Let me show you other usages of neon.  It can be used to make high voltage indicators, vacuum tubes, lightening arrestors, helium neon lasers, television tubes, wave meter tubes, plasma tubes and many more.

Neon Facts 10: the red orange color

Neon often produces the striking red color. But people can eliminate the color if the neon is charged with electricity.
