The scream is Munch’s most recognizable work of art. It was renamed The Cry in 1893. It was sold in the price of $119 million in 2012. It broke a new record.

Munch was born on 12th December 1863 in Löten, Norway. He had four siblings and he was the second child in the family.

Edvard Munch Facts 3: tragedy of family

In 1864, his family decided to live in Oslo. Then the tragedy of his family occurred here. Four years later, his mother passed away because she was infected with tuberculosis. Then his sister Sophie died with the same disease. Another sister of his was suffered from mental illness in the age of 15 years old. In the age of 30, his brother died because of Pneumonia.

At first, he attended the engineering college. He studied about engineering, but he decided to leave the school because he was interested to learn about art.

Edvard Munch Facts 5: Royal School of Art and Design

He followed his passion of art by studying in Royal School of Art and Design in 1881. Then he decided to rent a studio with other 6 artists to create an exhibition show.

It seems that Munch was not wrong when he chose art over engineering.  He traveled to Paris, France for three weeks after having a scholarship from the college.

The Sick Child was his first work when he moved back to Oslo. He finished this work in 1886. The painting depicts the death of his sister.

His father died in 1889. Then he decided to live in France until 1892. He got the fund to live in the country from the college.

Edvard Munch Facts 9: work when living in France

When he lived in France, he was very productive. He painted 22 works for the Berlin Exhibition in 1902. Some of his paintings include “Jealousy” (1894–95), “Melancholy” (c. 1892–93), “Despair” (1892), and “Anxiety” (1894).

In 1900s, Munch was not able to control his several drinking problem and mental illness. He had to continually check his condition in a private sanitarium.
