Her parents were James and Elizabeth Baumfree. There were 10 or 12 children in the family and Truth was one of them. Her parents were bought Colonel Hardenbergh to live in a hilly region, Swartekill.

The estates and slaves of Colonel Hardenbergh were given to Charles Hardenbergh, the son of the colonel. In 1806, Charles died and Belle, the young Truth was sold to John Neely for a flock of sheep for $100. She was 9 years old at that time.  Find facts about Slavery in America here.

Truth stated that Neely was a harsh and cruel man. She was beaten every single day by Neely. In 1808, she was sold Martinus Schryver of Port Ewen for $105. Then Truth was sold to John Dumont of West Park in 1810.

Truth stated that Dumont was kind to him. However, her life was difficult because the second wife of Dumont did not like her.

Robert was a slave from the neighboring farm that she met in 1815. She fell in love with him. However, the relationship was objected by Robert’s owner for he would not own their children of both married. Robert sneaked over to see his lover. Since Catton knew about it, Robert was beaten. Finally he died because of injuries. It made Truth feel bad.
