Magritte was born in Lessines on 21 November 1898. It is a town in the province of Hainaut, Belgium.

His father worked as a tailor and a textile merchant.  He was Leopold Magritte. His mother was a milliner before she married to Leopold. Her name was Regina Bertinchamps. In the family, Rene was the oldest son.

It is not easy to find out the early life of Rene. In 1910, he started a drawing lesson. The shocking part about his early life is that his mother committed suicide on 12 March 1912. She drowned herself in River Sambre. Actually her mother had attempted to suicide before.

There is a legend about the death of her mother and Rene.  They believed that a 13- year old Rene was there when the people began to lift her body from the river. However, this story was not supported by the recent research.

The death of his mother inspired him to create a painting. When her mother’s body was retrieved from the river, the dress covered her face.
